Booked as advertised large double room with private bathroom for £139.00 inc. breakfast. Couldn’t find the hotel in the dark as the main hotel sign is not lit up. Upon checkin was told by receptionist the private bathroom is not actually in the room but more like a shared corridor, this was no good as we didn’t have our night wear so she changed the room to a standard double with en-suite in the bedroom. She then explained the room is not in the hotel but in a building down the street, not even in hotel grounds!!. It appears as though they bought it to offer more accommodation, but we paid to stay in a hotel not an apartment block! We trundled outside into the dark wet night and eventually found the building no thanks to the lack of signage or assistance although she did draw on a map for us! The room was clean and tidy but very compact, the bed was a very small double bed, the blinds let light in, no soap dish or shelving in the shower and the extractor fan didn’t work, window missing a handle. The TV was hit and miss and most channels suffered from poor signal and were unwatchable. The Wi-Fi worked ok.
There is no security chain or deadbolt on the bedroom door so anyone with an appropriate key card could access the room which has happened to us in a previous hotel. There is no wardrobe, there is a small pole with hangers on top of witch sit the iron and hairdryer, if you are small you will need to stand on a chair. No luggage rack. The desk, if you can call it that is tiny. There is no full length mirror and no biscuits with your tea. The walls are very thin with poor insulation, we could hear the couple next door talking, amongst other things, tv etc very easily. When their door banged to a close our wall shook! I would recommend the owners/management try a night in one of these rooms.
We couldn’t get into the restaurant until 9pm, fair enough we hadn’t booked and it was Saturday nigh. We were told we could get bar food but we would have to order food and drinks at the bar! No table service, the bar was packed with what looked like non-hotel guests therefore we left and found a nice Indian instead with great food and service.
Breakfast was just ok, temporary tables hold the usual juices, cereal and hot food which kept running out due to the small amount of items in each dish, no mushrooms, no scrambled eggs and even had to wait for bread. The breakfast girls were pleasant and apparently one member of staff had called in sick. The decor could be improved and suffers from a lack of attention to detail, even the artwork labels are falling off as they are stuck on the walls with bluetak
£139 plus parking doesn’t represent good value for money regardless that the location is central and we wouldn’t choose to stay here again. We found it difficult to find and signage very poor, the fat badger seems to be better advertised than the actual hotel. Reception never asked how our stay had been. less
