First of all, this hotel is conveniently located right beside American Legion Post 263. They offer draft and bottled beer as well as you favourite spirit. Met some wonderful folks there. They also have a few slot machines (state legalized gambling). On Mondays' they offer a small menu with good food at a fantastic price, dinner for 5 was $30. 00 non-alcoholic drinks included. A juke box and a Nevada ticket machine are also available. A shout-out to Vicki, the bartender, thanks, it was a blast :)
A wonderful sports bar/10 pin bowling alley/state legal gambling spot/ small restaurant complex called "Logans Lanes" sits at the entrance of the driveway to the hotel. There are pool tables and shuffleboard too!!! Great folks, great service and great food. Both places are within easy walking distance and on the same property as the hotel.
All other amenities are within easy driving distance. Big box stores, restaurants, banks etc all close by. There is also a hospital just up the road.
Upon arrival, we were impressed with the grounds and the beautiful array of flowers and foliage in the gardens and entranceway. Lots of free parking too. The worlds' largest covered wagon sits out front with a giant statue of Abraham Lincoln seated on it, reading a book.Wonderful. The "RailSplitter", as it is known, is quite the tourist attraction and great for pics. As we entered the lobby we were greeted by Tracy with a big smile and welcome. Very pleasant and accomodating. The lobby was tastefully decorated in fall foliage, with a nice fireplace, planters and sofa, chairs and coffee table. Very inviting.
Our room was clean and comfortable, with nice big comfy beds, a small fridge, microwave, coffee maker (coffee, tea and hot chocolate), ironing board and iron as well as a hairdryer in the bathroom area. There was a nice table for my suitcase but could have used an extra rack for my family members. The free WIFI worked very nicely and was easily accessed. There was also an extra comforter in the closet for those who prefer more warmth. A nice roomy dresser was there tool The air-conditioner worked like a charm and was very quiet, barely audible. Lots of outlets for chargers and such. Loved the body wash, shampoo and conditioner dispenser in the shower, great addition. This hotel has only 2 floors with a laundry room on the second floor and there is an elevator. Everything is handy, the ice machine, pop machine, exercise room, breakfast lounge and outdoor pool. There is also a little area where you can buy snacks, etc. The breakfast lounge is very nice, very clean with a flatscreen for those wanting to catch the news or whatever with breakfast. Breakfast is great, scrambled eggs, cheesey eggs on a bun, french toast (depending on the day, but it's all good) sausages (really good and I'm not usually that fussy on them but I had them every day I was there, haha) a pancake making machine, just push a button (once or twice etc, depending on how many you want) and in a couple of minutes you have nice fresh hot pancakes, butter, syrup and cinnamon, mmmm. They have sugar free syrup for those who prefer it. There is also yogurt, fresh fruit, cereals, bagles, biscuits and gravy (didn't try those) and a couple of different pastries for those with a sweet tooth in the morning. Great coffee, a variety of teas, hot chocolate, orange and apple juice. Cream cheese, butter, jams, peanut butter, honey, milk and cream are all there. Breakfast starts at 6 am and ends at 10 am. They also provide what they call "Grab and Go" for those up too early for the breakfast, ask at the front desk, they are always willing to assist you. The outdoor pool is small (deepest part is 5') but it was just right for us. The pool area is clean with tables, chairs, lounges and one table had an umbrella. It's a small area but very nice with potted plants in the corners, attractive lighting and a nice wrought iron fence. The property out back is not all that well groomed but we did not care, we had such a wonderful time there. It does appear that they are working on it though. The pool is open from 10 am to 10 pm, no lifeguard on duty. A big shoutout to all the members of the Best Western Plus team in Lincoln Illinois, Terry ( does the breakfast some days, great job) Tracy, Stacy, Ash, Diana and Chris all at the front desk, so nice to meet you all and thanks for being such gracious hosts. Didn't get the names of the folks that do the rooms, but thanks for all the kindnesses :) Hoping to return next year.
The only thing that could have been better is the signage. The hotel faces Lincoln Parkway but the entrance and address are on 5th Street. The sign at the entrance (after we found it) is very small and easily missed. Also, a suitcase rack would be nice, there was a table that I used but an extra rack would have come in handy.
There is a fair in Lincoln in early August, car racing Friday nights during the summer at the fairgrounds (just up the street from this hotel) as well as the farmers' market Saturday mornings and a hot air balloonfest (the largest in the midwest) around the end of August at the airport (again just a short drive from the hotel), weather permitting, a carnival, beer tent and live bands. We went, the balloons could not do the "Glow" at dusk because of lightning but it was all fun just the same.
About 1/2 hour east of Lincoln is a little town called "Clinton" ( I know, I know haha). This is where my daughter and son-in- law live. Nice little town with it's own festivals and quaint shops including one called "Quilters' Delight". If you are down that way stop in and say hi to Shirley Monkman, she and her sweet little companion "Benji" would love to see you and here your stories. Sign her book and have a look around the shop. They have an "Apple and Pork Festival" in early September. less
