We chose this hotel because it had group room rates for the 2019 Frozen Faceoff, which was held at the Xcel Energy Center. We weren't sure what to expect, as we had never attended this event before, and had only stayed at one Best Western in the past five years. (We're normally Marriott people.)
After this weekend, my husband said, "We're staying here next year!"
If you're in decent shape, the hotel is within walking distance of the Xcel. (It was about 8 blocks, I believe.) Easier to get there (downhill) than back (uphill), but do-able. The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle, but we didn't end up taking it because the weather was nice and we could use the exercise.
Our room had a beautiful view of the Cathedral of Saint Paul. The Interstate was right out our window, but the noise wasn't too bad. (We ran the fan on low for ambient noise.)
The room was clean and comfortable. The pillows weren't my favorite, but there were a lot to choose from. The bathroom was small but clean. There wasn't a closet but the armoire was a nice size.
The staff was great. Front desk accommodated all of our needs. Housekeeping was super friendly. We ate at the Peddler's Pub the first night. The food was very good and Jesse, the bartender/waiter, was great. Would love if the restaurant served food after 9 p.m., though, because there aren't a lot of food options nearby (within walking distance).
The breakfast wasn't what we expected — the website said "cooked to order" but it ended up being a buffet. But it was an *extensive* buffet – eggs, sausage, french toast, pancakes, oatmeal, pastries, and cereal. The eggs were really good. Four types of juice (orange, apple, grapefruit, cranberry). There was also hot water for hot chocolate and apple cider (and this was available throughout the day/evening).
As others have mentioned, parking is a bit pricy ($10/day) but it has in/out privileges with the gate code. There is a light rail stop just a couple of blocks from the hotel (3 blocks? towards the state capitol building). (Note: the Xcel is the opposite direction and not on the light rail system, so that's not applicable for those seeking transportation to the Xcel.)
Overall, would definitely recommend for folks looking for a hotel close to the Xcel. less
