We stayed at this hotel for 2-nights for a mid-week trip to the Outer Banks. We booked a room that would accommodate our family and were able to book a AAA rate on the Best Western website. We were excited to get an "oceanfront" room, and per the TripAdvisor reviews, I put in the notes that we'd love a room on an upper floor to enjoy the view.
The negatives associated with this hotel were the overall advertisement of the rooms and the check-in process. We arrived a bit in advance of the 4:00 check-in time, but decided we'd see if our room was ready. It wasn't, which was fine. We were told to come back in a little while, but I asked if they wouldn't mind calling my cell phone when the room was available. I got a very half-hearted agreement and could tell that the front desk person probably had no intention of actually calling me. They didn't. When I checked back in person an hour later, our room was indeed ready. I found out that we'd been given a first-floor room, which was in contradiction to my request for an upper floor. I learned that they consider all of the rooms to be "oceanfront" as the hotel itself is on the beach. But that I would have had to book a room that was "ocean view" for an upper level room with a better view. I think that kind of wording is a bit deceptive and misleading. I would have appreciated it if someone from the hotel would have reached out to me in advance and told me the difference of their room categories/prices. I booked this room well in advance and if someone had read my special request notes, this confusion could have been avoided. What made it worse was that one of the front desk agents made a comment that I'd have to pay a lot more than I did to get an ocean view room and that kind of a comment was unnecessary.
The hotel itself is just okay. Needs some TLC and some updating. The pool and hot tub area could use an upgrade. Given that it is right on the beach, we were pleasantly surprised that it didn't seem damp/musty or have any sand. The housekeeping staff does a good job.
In terms of services while we were there, the breakfast room was so crowded on the first day we were there, that we bailed and went to a restaurant instead. On the second day, I went earlier and got a tray to bring food back to my family in the room. The staff in the breakfast room was very pleasant and helpful. The in-room wi-fi is painfully slow.
Another positive was that we were granted a late check-out by one hour. We appreciated that.
Overall, this hotel was just okay. I wouldn't be opposed to staying there again but would just adjust my expectations. less
