In some respects, the Ilford version of the Best Western isn't bad. Rooms are reasonably neat and clean; it's close to public transportation, shops and restaurants; there's an excellent cooked breakfast. Prices are generally moderate.
But a lot of this is offset by the security situation, which is disastrous. The property is divided between three separate premises, all within 100m of each other. I stayed at the one (corner of Argyle Road and York Street) that has no reception desk or staff on site. In principle, access is supposed to be available only via a code. In practice the outer doors to the street are open at all times, day and night, making it possible for anyone to walk off the street and get as far as your bedroom door. Odd things go on at this place: the person in the room next door, a shirtless young man, had a constant parade of older male visitors coming who were obviously strangers to him and hung around the corridor outside while waiting. I've no idea what was going on, but it probably wasn't legal. Fire doors were propped open inside the premises; I'm sure that wasn't legal either. And there are bars across the windows in the rooms themselves, which certainly makes it more difficult for intruders to get in, but also makes it impossible for guests in an emergency to get out.
If I were a lone female traveller, I'd give this place a fairly wide berth. Those who aren't will need to balance their desire for value for money against their tolerance for risk. less
