Elegant 3 star hotel but looks 2 stars more, with beautiful garden (limited disabled access)
I stayed at here overnight on Saturday 10 June 2017 in a traditional room and loved it. I chose the hotel because of its reviews and it deserves its reputation.
The hotel is in the centre of historic La Rochelle, in a quiet side street, close to Place de Verdun, where there is a small bus station and is a 10 minute level walk to the port. I took a pre-booked taxi from the airport which cost about 18 - 20 euros. Within a 5 minute walk there are shops, cafes and restaurants.
The hotel is historic and very elegant. The main entrance has 4 steps with a handrail to the front door, regrettably it's not wheelchair accessible, I have a mobility disability and walk with a crutch and the stairs were doable and once inside there is a lift to the other floors.
I stayed in a traditional room which was huge and beautifully decorated. The room was very clean, tidy and well maintained. There was a comfortable double bed and traditional furniture. A flat screen TV, which I didn't really use, I think it had the BBC News channel. There was a large wardrobe with a electronic safe inside (no additional charge for the safe). There was free wifi which worked well. The en suit bathroom had a walk in shower, sink and toilet. I had contacted the hotel before I arrived and changed my booking as the rooms overlooking the garden had baths rather than showers. I think for most people the walk in shower would be great but as I have a mobility disability I found the shower's flooring too slippery, if the hotel refurbish their bathrooms in the future I hope they consider installing some wet rooms with non slip flooring, as this would assist people with mobility difficulties. My room overlooked a quiet residential street and there were shutters as well as curtains at the windows.
The hotel has the wow factor. The reception and communal areas are breath takingly impressive. There's a dramatic staircase and the bar, lounge and breakfast room are extremely elegant. The garden is a big plus, quite large, beautifully maintained and after a hot, busy morning exploring La Rochelle's busy port area it was a such a delight to sit in a shaded area with a drink in the tranquillity of the garden, listening to the bird songs.
The hotel serve breakfast at an additional cost, about 12 euros, there's a choice of hot and cold drinks, pastries, fruit, yogurt and eggs. Food is frequently replenished and its self service. If the weather permits try to get a table in the garden. The reception staff were amazingly helpful, friendly and spoke good English.
It's a beautiful, well managed hotel, if you're looking for somewhere special to stay in La Rochelle I'd highly recommend it. I wished I had been able to stay longer and I would not hesitate to stay there again. less
