Visiting the annual Christmas Country Fair in the International Conference Centre we decided to incorporate an overnight stay at the aforementioned hotel.
The Cedar Court Hotel is reputed to be the oldest hotel in Harrogate, it stands in an impressive position overlooking parkland, has easy access and is a ten minute walk into the town centre.
Having arrived early for our check-in we decided to have a snack in the bar / lounge, the décor and furniture in this area requires some serious TLC.
we ordered Yorkshire ham sandwiches with Yorkshire tea, sandwiches consisted of two slices of thin brown bread with a slice of processed ham, a few crisps and some wilting salad greens, presentation nil points. cost £17.60, you have been warned.
Checking in we were upgraded to an executive room, number 203 on the first floor ?
there are 2 very efficient lifts to access the upper floors, so good news for people with mobility problems.
The décor on our floor had been updated using modern brick cladding totally out of character with this historical building.
our executive room was clean and appeared to be recently decorated, although very small, a standard room by our experience at other hotels.
the highlight of our stay was the restaurant, smallish for the size of hotel, welcoming with a good choice of fare and friendly service. luckily we were allocated a table within a semi circular booth, some of the tables were far to close together making private conversation difficult.
returning to the bar / lounge area for a nightcap we found the bar littered with dirty glasses and empty bottles, the two barmen busy doing nothing seemed oblivious to the situation, not a welcoming situation for guests.
breakfast was good with efficient service with an overspill room available so plenty of room for everyone.
deciding on a change from our regular hotel when visiting Harrogate, on the assumption that a change is as good as a rest, would we return ?
personally the answer would be no, the restaurant apart, the hotel fails to live up to this lovely historical building.
if you are looking for a historical hotel with easy access and lovely outlook, give it a try. less
