This delightful country house hotel has a unique feature – its own vineyard. The 600 vines are a 30-second walk from the front entrance and they typically produce between 250 and 700 bottles of crisp medium-dry white wine every year (the record is 1,200 bottles).

Gary Wicks, the hotel’s gardener, has been in charge of the grapes for 20 years – though he doesn’t make the wine himself. After harvesting his crop in October, he drives the fruit down the road to a chap in Bath who looks after the fermentation.

But what does Best Western Leigh Park Hotel wine taste like? Alas, Gary’s not the man to ask: he’s teetotal.
