Reasonable value if you get a deal - food better than accommodation.

We stayed here to visit the two reenactors markets in the area and had planned to do some additional sightseeing but due to the global situation spent most of our time in the hotel. We got a deal through Secret Escapes which included breakfast and an evening meal each night. The hotel itself is lovely, we unfortunately were in a later added on building which though perfectly serviceable was not the luxury break we had thought we had booked (hindsight, should've read more reviews!). We had a couple of issues with other guests and the shower in our room which the staff dealt with in an excellent manner though the shower problem could've been avoided were the drains cleared and cleaned as a matter of course. Our only gripe was the checkout procedure was lengthly (turns out there was an express option were not offered) and this was further compounded by the only member of staff we saw not to be using hand gel regularly and then coughing into his hands and then handling my card - in these times unfortunately unforgivable!!
We made use of the leisure facilities - but be warned the guest towelling dressing gowns have seen better days (ours no longer had belt loops and we kept loosing the belts!) and the slippers way more flimsy than other hotels' we've had before. Also if you are in the rooms in the annexe part of the hotel, it's a VERY LONG walk past the main dining room and lounge bar to get to the facilities and the entrance lobby for the leisure club members which you have to pass through is freezing!
The best part, and the reason I give his hotel more than 2 stars, is the food. We had excellent service at breakfast and evening meal - in the hotels' Country Carvery restaurant not the main dining room but not an issue for us as this was clear when we booked. All self service (at the time) and all well stocked, some pastries not restocked in the morning but plenty of other items available. All the food was delicious and the nightly carvery hot and fresh with the addition of 'chef's specials' each night should you fancy something a little different to freshly carved meats. Staff all amazingly attentive and pleasant in the restaurant and the place was spotlessly clean. I would consider staying again if we got a deal and I needed to be in the area but might not elect it as a choice for a stand alone relaxing break. less

Thank you for your review.
We do appreciate your kind comments about the hotel, our hard working team and the great food you received. Despite the current global situation we really do appreciate you continuing with your trip.
I am sorry you found our check-out process lengthy, and we will review our procedures. I am disappointed that our strict cleanliness procedures were not adhered to and this will be addressed with the staff member.
I do hope we have the pleasure in welcoming you back again soon, where you can be assured of our best attention.
