I stayed in The George in Nov 19 for perhaps the 8th time since 2001. I'm writing about actions staff members took to turn what would have been an awful experience into a wonderful one. I was in Norwich for the funeral of a dear friend. The night after the funeral, I booked a table in the hotel's restaurant for those remaining in town to share dinner with the grieving widower. It turned out a mistake was made, + the restaurant could not handle our group. It was a Saturday night, + we really had no other options. I was upset, + became quite hostile toward the staff. Rather than respond in kind, Sally (front desk) + Ian (restaurant/catering manager) went to work to try + find a solution. I'm not sure how they managed, as they had a group of 65 in the next room, but they managed to set up a private room (which I had not asked for) in which our group could dine, + they assigned the absolutely delightful Alistair (I hope I spelled it right) to wait on us. It turned out to be exactly what the widower needed, a quiet place to be with friends, most of whom were departing the next day. I cannot say enough good things about how this was handled. Sally never lost her cool, even though a million things were going on around her. She was a very calming influence to my upset American ranter persona. Ian + Alistair were professionals, doing their jobs, making things happen, not complaining. Their actions made a huge positive impression on all of us, + helped us provide some loving support to the widower, who had very suddenly + without warning lost the love of his life. The room, the food, + the service far exceeded our expectations. We will remember the kindness of Sally, Ian, + Alistair always.
Thank you. less
