A very good mero hotel, but the location is not perfect.
I decided to book this hotel for 5 nights on a recent trip to Wales (UK) with my wife to take in the “5 star Severn Bore” and do some exploring of the South Wales area. It seemed like the ideal location to base ourselves and being a Best Western, I guessed it should live up to the standards I have come to expect from the Best Western chain.
The hotel is right next to the busy A4042 and when I first went to my room it was so close to the road I expected it to be exceptionally noisy, but I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of road noise. Even with the window open the sound was not intrusive and both my wife and I slept well each night. The location does not render itself to local walks as to walk anywhere you would need to cross the busy A4042.
The hotel is an old Travel Lodge which has been completely refurbished to Best Western style and standards. The double room I booked was slightly smaller than other Best Western hotels I have stayed in, but that is not really a complaint as it was clean and tidy.
My only real issues was that the shower room was a bit on the small side, the toilet was very close to the wall, which would be a problem for a larger bodied person, as the toilet paper dispenser was also on that wall, however is was spotlessly clean and everything worked properly.
Towels and toiletries were supplied and the room cleaned each day.
I have to give 5 stars to the staff for friendliness, helpfulness and professionalism, which is again what I expect from any Best Western hotel.
The breakfast is not the usual full English and the hot food consists of Bacon, Scrambled Egg and Beans and it does explain this on the website when booking. The other choices of breakfast were limited, but if like me you are not after a large breakfast then it is fine. Be aware there is a 2 hour time window for the breakfast which may not suit all.
The breakfast area is in the Reception area which is not ideal and it is a most likely a throwback from the fact it was a Travel Lodge and space for a breakfast area would have been limited. However the website does say it is a Metro hotel and I was expecting limited eating facilities
The only major negative point on my stay was the condition of the area behind the fuel service station which you had to drive through to leave; it was strewn with rubbish and generally extremely dirty. I left the hotel Saturday morning at 6:30am and Sunday morning and 7:30am which was before the area was cleaned. This is not a reflection on the Hotel as it is outside their control. The rubbish emanates from the patrons of KFC and the Service Station as it is used as a car park to eat. Some of the rubbish bins were full, but the further away ones were not. I still fail to understand the mentality of persons throwing rubbish from their cars and leaving. Whereas the bins were emptied later in the morning the area still looked grubby which was a stark contrast to the front of the hotel.
Perhaps all stake holders of the site could devise a better system of control in this area.
Would I stay here again, yes, but unlikely for more than 1 or 2 nights, it is in my opinion more suitable for passing trade; however it was good value for money.
Full marks to the hotel, but unfortunately the location is not perfect. less
