I had stayed previously at the Ullesthorpe Court and was looking forward to my return. Sadly however I was to be bitterly disappointed.
So on the positive- the front desk staff were as professional and stunningly helpful as I remembered and definitely went the extra mile. The room was to standard, clean and well appointed. I should also point out that as a Best Western Diamond member, I have a fair idea of the standard expected from a ‘plus’ hotel.
The food in the bar was hearty and brilliant, although not without issue.
There however endeth the good stuff.
The leisure facilities were tired and awkward in the configuration. The very young man on the front desk was succumbing to hormonal pressures, being far more interested in chatting to the girls next door than attending to guests. The pool / puddle is laughable, 0.9 m in the shallow end to a massive 1.4m in the deep, about 10m long and big enough, just, for 3 swimmers / waders.
There were two large golf parties in - now don’t get me wrong, there’s a clue in the title of the hotel, and as a player myself I certainly have no issues. Where I do have a problem is when the hotel fails to control their booking which results in an overstretched catering staff and facilities. My meal (two courses) took two hours in the first night and I eventually cancelled my desert order. Being promised an improvement I rashly opted to eat at the hotel again. Unbelievably, in spite of me saying the day before that I would eat in the restaurant, as a resident I was denied access as it was full. I once again ate in the bar, and all was good, until I decided to have desert. 45 minutes after ordering with no sign on the horizon I once again cancelled my order.
What truly angered me was the complete indifference of the bar staff. No apologies, no help, no service. I can honestly say I have never seen such a poor performance, clearly they are so used to these circumstances, they have just given up.
This is the first time I have ever rated a Best Western as ‘Poor‘ and I take no pleasure in it. The golf course may be worth the price and hassle, but if you are thinking to use the hotel as a business stop - don’t. I will never return, not because they have had issues, but because they need to change most of the front of house staff before they can even begin to fix the problems because the ones they have simply don’t care. less
