Yes, the presence of four youth hockey teams in a hotel is going to result in more noise than, let’s say, a quilting convention. However, by the reaction of the staff, you’d think Van Halen had just trashed the place.
They issued noise complaints to everyone including those of us who were just sitting in our rooms talking quietly. Included in the complaint was a threat to kick us out of the hotel while revoking our group discount and keeping our deposit.
We were generally looked upon as a nuisance and an inconvenience. One morning we showed up at the breakfast buffet at 9:30, a full half hour before it shuts down, only to find it quite depleted. When we pointed this out to one of the workers and asked that the food be replenished, she replied with a sneer, “Okay, one more time and that’s it.”
And if the staff was sorely lacking in people skills, the residents of the hotel were far worse; threatening kids, calling them names and, on one occasion, grabbing one of the players and shaking him. Still, the staff seemed far more concerned with noise levels than with the fact that one of their residents had assaulted a child.
Each of us has been involved in numerous hockey tournaments at hotels throughout the province and this is the first time anyone can recall being so poorly received by the staff.
If there’s one positive it’s that the cleaning staff was very friendly. Perhaps they should be promoted to the front desk so that all guests will feel welcome. Until then, I would strongly recommend that you avoid this hotel if you are; part of a hockey tournament, traveling with children, or Van Halen less
