We stayed at this hotel from 27th to 29th December 2016 and found that the hotel was very quiet with hardly any other guests there on the first night with only a few joining us over the next two days. I assume this is because the hotel had been closed over Christmas.
The hotel itself is lovely. We were greeted by a very friendly and accommodating staff member on reception (in fact all the hotel staff were excellent throughout our stay) who allowed us to check in early which was very welcome after a long drive with a small baby. We had booked at double room and had requested a travel cot which was all set up for us already. The hotel had provided bed linen and a towel for our baby which was lovely as, in our only other experience of sleeping in a hotel since he was born, they did not do this, instead expecting us to bring our own from home which seemed ridiculous! The room wasn't overly big but was perfectly adequate and well equipped and together with the bathroom was very clean indeed. My sister and her family were staying in a family room with a double and single bed plus a travel cot. This was a much bigger room obviously and she commented that it was very spacious for their needs. My parents had booked the suite and were absolutely delighted with it. It was huge with a completely separate living and eating area, massive bathroom with walk-in shower and free-standing bath and a spacious bedroom all with golf course views. Suffice to say we were all impressed and very pleased with our rooms.
We had chosen to add the breakfast option to our stay when booking and we were not disappointed here either. The restaurant where breakfast is served is very nice and there was so much choice on offer, all fresh and with more options cooked to order. Well worth the additional cost and highly recommended to everyone.
My sister and her children used the swimming pool whilst we were there and enjoyed it. It is very deep so obviously supervision is essential but it was lovely to be able to entertain them in the hotel and the facilities were all very good.
Why then does this review only receive 4 stars and not 5...?
A couple of reasons if I'm honest. The first of which was restaurant being closed on the first night of our stay as it was a bank holiday. This seems to be a ridiculous policy but at the time we weren't too put out as we were assured we could order from a very similar menu in the on-site bar. Unfortunately though we were not really impressed with our experience in the bar at all. The food itself was OK but the service was so terrible it rendered it entirely irrelevant. There was just one young man in attendance for the whole bar meaning a very long wait to be served every time we wanted drinks or more food and he didn't really seem to know what he was doing, frequently disappearing somewhere "to ask" when we ordered something that was on the menu then taking an age to reappear. Our food was brought out in stages which, when trying to have a family meal, was very annoying and our dinner plates had not been cleared when our desserts were brought out meaning we all had to do a shuffle around and pile them up on a neighbouring table where they remained (joined by our dessert plates and numerous empty glasses) for the remainder of the night. It was also noisy in the bar (not in it's self a problem, it is a bar after all) but again, this was a family meal with 3 young children/babies and so was not really what we had hoped for. The second reason for giving the hotel 4 rather than 5 stars was the temperature. It was freezing outside for the duration of our stay but the entire hotel seemed to operate on some weird zonal heating system. Communal areas were consistently very cold but the rooms were stiflingly hot necessitating us to open the window all of the time (anyone with a small baby knows this is not a good thing!). There was a control thing on the radiator in our room but whichever way we turned it seemed to make the room even hotter so we gave up after the first night.
Overall though this is a very nice hotel and I would happily stay here again if we are ever in the area. less
