We first stayed at The Angel a few months before lockdown, and decided to revisit after a previously excellent stay. Please to say that standards have not slipped and we had a very enjoyable second stay.
Location is great- right in the centre of town (a 10 minute walk to the train station) but no issues with noise at night surprisingly. The car park is large and we had no issue getting a space.
The hotel seems to be dealing very well with all Covid restrictions and precautions, and we felt safe and comfortable throughout our visit. The leisure facilities are now open (although we did not have the time to use them) which is a nice touch. Plenty of hand sanitizing stations dotted around the hotel and polite reminder notices to wear a mask, but nothing onerous or nagging in any way (a balance which some other hotels seem to be struggling to achieve). Tables in common areas had been blocked off to allow distancing but had been done in a way that didn’t feel too noticeable.
Our room was clean and well appointed. Large flat screen TV, comfy bed and large fluffy full-sized bath sheets (not the dreaded tiny towels that you get in some hotels). We were staying in the main part of the hotel which is full of character. It’s an old building so some wear/tear, and less than perfect decoration is to be expected. Tea and coffee facilities provide (although with paper cups rather than mugs in the current climate) along with a hairdryer, ironing board, iron. To the hotel’s credit, they have thought of most things that you could possibly need for a short break.
We stayed on a dinner, bed and breakfast which is superb value. No complaints regarding the food, other than a disappointing stingy mezze starter, but maybe we were just being greedy! The evening menu is simple but tasty, and the £25pp spend was perfectly adequate for 2 courses. Breakfast is now a la carte affair rather than buffet, and service was quick and the food piping hot.
As usual, every staff member that we encountered was friendly and helpful. We requested the room that we had stayed in during our previous stay and the receptionist went above and beyond to try and secure the room for us (which sadly wasn’t unavailable, but we did book last minute so it’s to be expected). The servers at dinner and breakfast were unfailing pleasant.
Thoroughly recommend The Angel for a short break in a pretty market town. less
