FIrstly, after, reading the website. we expected a "Country House" style in the leafy suburbs....it wasn`t. The hotel is situated on a very busy road on the edge of Birmingham City centre, but there is ample secure parking. The front part of the building is old and very "Country House" (JRR Tolkien stayed there in 1916) and I have to say, very nice. After the disappointment of seeing the actual location of the hotel, this was a pleasant surprise. We checked in and were given our room number. At the rear of the hotel is a modern (1970`s/80`s??) extention and it turns out that our room was there, but it was a route march to get there. We asked if there was a room available in the old part. This would involve paying for an upgrade, which we were happy to do, but as there was going to be a wedding on the Saturday, we were told that it would be noisy in the room as it was directly above. We were given another room in the extension which was closer to the reception etc. The room itself was a reasonable size and quite well equipped but looked very tired...as indeed was the whole extension. The biggest problem with the room (and again, the extension) was that it was cold! You are unable to adjust the heating in the room (it is supposedly set at 21 degrees I think) and we had to contact Reception if we wanted it warmer. Reception sent a plug-in radiator to our room, but as the electric switches off when you leave the room, this was a bit hit-and-miss.
The food in the Restaurant was OK, but not exceptional...the menu was, in my opinion, a little bit limited. Prices however, were reasonable. Breakfast was very good, with a varied "Help-Yourself" buffet and a good "Full-English" option.
The staff were uniformly excellent....couldn`t fault any of them!
We didn`t hate our stay there. We chose it because location-wise it was ideal for what we wanted to do while we were there but sadly, the abiding memory that we will have of the hotel is the cold!
As the title says....It was OK.....But Could Have been Better. less
