My review of this hotel over the past weekend.
Friday night: Just booked in to find that our room is located in the middle of the hotel with the circulation corridor on the outside so people going to and from their rooms walk straight past our window and can see right in. I've never experienced this layout before and don't find it very pleasing. The room itself is very small with only just enough room to walk around the queen sized bed. Only 1 towel for two people. Just hope things get better !
Saturday morning : After an unrestful night in the small bed I thought I'd do an update. I should mention the decor in the bathroom. An avocado bathroom suit, very 1970s. The bath had white streaks which I guess was just from deposits from the hard water but to update the toilet by putting a white seat on an avocado bowl seems odd. The shower is just a handset shower attached to the mixer tap that just dribbles water through. There is no thermostatic unit on it so the water can just change from hot to cold whilst having a shower. We also had trouble finding enough space around the edge of the bed to put our suitcases without tripping over them.
The restaurant is very tastefully decorated but as there was a party of 16 of us they set up a table in the bar for us. The food was OK although the pastry on the steak and ale pie wasn't very good and I noticed most people left it. The wine was good and service was fine.
So, now Sat night. Had a very nice breakfast this morning of eggs Benedict and the full English breakfast looked excellent too. The service was a bit slow and the coffee was awful. The hotel manager came to see us and apologised for the room but, as he said, he can't do much about the design of the hotel with the internal rooms.
This evening our group of 24 has had a most excellent meal in the York Room with excellent service.
Talking to others in our group it's obvious that the standard of the rooms in this hotel vary widely as some said they had a large room whilst others were like us and had tiny internal rooms. It seems some rooms have been refurbished too, although ours obviously wasn't. Annoyingly, the price charged for the large and refurbished rooms is the same as the small rooms so we feel that we didn't get good value for money either.
So to summarise, I would come back to eat in this hotel but would not stay and sadly, would probably stay across the road at the Premier Inn where I know the standard of the rooms are much better. less
