I've stayed here before, always overnight, with my two dogs on the (very) long drive from Los Angeles to Mendocino and the experience here has always been a good one until now – friendly staff, a clean room, no elevators or valet, simply pull in, check, in and then fall into the bed after driving for seven hours. Not fancy at all, but functional and comfortable. (Aside from the square, squishy pillows).
With the pandemic, though, my travel goals and priorities for this trip were very different than simply finding a bed for the night: Safety. And on the this level, this trip, the hotel did not live up to what it and Trip Advisor promised. It was a huge failure.
Aside from a sanitary and sanitized environment, I also wanted to avoid contact with groups of people and thereby minimize my chances of contracting the virus. Which is why the pull-in, check-in and fall into bed experience seemed ideal. No valets. No elevators. No groups of people. Which was true. And although I did come across fewer people, none of them – including staff – were wearing masks.
One of the reasons I felt safe staying here is because Best Western goes to great pains and lengths to let us guests know that they're setting very high standards for and protocols for their us. But these claims – at least at this hotel – were disingenuous:
When we checked in, the front desk staff were not wearing masks. To be fair: They were super friendly, accommodating and smiley, but all that mattered far less than mattered less than my safety. The fact that county mandates and hotel chain assurances were ignored right off the bat called into question all their other safety protocols. Quite simply, they lost my trust and I also lost some sleep. And they lost a customer.
If masks don't matter and you need a bed for the night, this is as good a place as any. But if safety is your concern, I'd urge you to look elsewhere. less
