One of the only hotels in Blackpool that has parking and don't the hotel management know how much of a bonus that can be!! Trouble is that the hotel is in need of a makeover to bring it up to even the mid point of the Best Western hotels.
For those that are not in the know, all Best Western hotels in the UK are privately owned and they pay for the privilege of badging themself under the BW umbrella. As a consequence, the Best Western management team regularly visit each of the hotels that are not performing too well and suggest how the hotel can do better.
On day two of our visit, two members from the BW team had a meeting in the hotel lounge with the lady manager at a table quite close to where we were having a cup of coffee. The conversation was clearly about how BW were concerned about the hotel's present status, with the hotel manageress making excuse after excuse why things were so bad.
Had I been invited to chip in with my comments, I would have mentioned that I am a Platinum Best Western card holder and told them that our room was perhaps the worst we have ever stayed in. It is single sized and was sold to us as being a twin. The bathroom is disgusting and smells damp and the plumbing looks to have been finished off by a 4-year old child. The double-glazed windows are blown and the indide is full of condensation, which in fact was perhaps a good thing as to the left of the window is a builders gantry and direct access to the builder who could look into the room.
I of course complained to the manageress and said that I was not prepared to pay the very high charge advertised, which in fact was higher than two of the 5-star Marriott hotels we had stayed in earlier in our UK tour. After some chat she said that she would discount the price and on checking out noticed that instead of £210 for our stay, the charge would be £170 - I paid the bill but I left disgruntled and now have a lower regard for BW hotels
We have no complaints about the parking or the quiet location to to the North of central Blackpool, which is still within walking distance. The breakfast was quite good and the staff in the dining room very helpful. One thing that we thought strange was that the reception staff would not allow queueing of guests in front of their desk, asking those behind to wait in the lounge and be called - no doubt this was because they receive a lot of complaints and are try to minimise the effect on the other guests.
"Best" Western - not on your nelly! I would call the hotel "Worst Western instead! - especially as one of the walls in the dining room looks to be falling down any time soon! less
