We picked somewhere roughly halfway between Gower and Cardiff for the last night of a few days camping and found the Aberavon Beach. The price was very reasonable for a nights B&B, it was dog friendly and the bonus of a pool and jacuzzi was nice. The reviews were also encouraging. We'd asked for a sea view room as well and were pleased to see we had one, even if the views weren't as picturesque that day.
We arrived and checked in, used the pool facilities for a little while then went to the cinema as the weather was very wet and outside activities were a no.
Unfortunately, the weather became worse, some of the worst storms I think to have hit South Wales in some years apparently. We were very glad to not be in a tent until we came back to our room to find it flooding from water coming in around the window. We called reception, obviously very concerned, to report the issue. Initially it took 3 calls before anyone answered and then we were simply offered some extra towels. I pressed to get someone to come and have a look as it was really quite bad and asked about moving to another room. I was told someone would be up but they were fully booked. About 10mins later a girl arrived with some extra towels but she was clearly not in any way qualified to assess the issue and didn't even enter the room.
We mopped up what we could and moved our soaked belongings away and went down for some drinks to escape the dripping noise that soon became similar to chinese water torture. Getting yet more towels form reception we retired for the evening and tried to sleep with the TV on to drown out the drips.
Thankfully overnight it did stop raining and we enjoyed breakfast which was plentiful, warm and very tasty, there were many options availble which was nice.
We checked out and after explaing our situation, and that they would find 8 soaked bath towels around the window, were at least offered a partial refund.
Overall the hotel is much more tired generally than the pics would have you think, the bar staff were not busy at any point and didn't really seem to have much pride in their service, appearing bored.
The pool area is not large and we weren't advised at any point there would be childrens swimming lessons in there either, luckily we'd left the pool by that point.
I'm sure in the summer the area is much more vibrant, most things were shut when we visited by the cinema is walking distance so that was good.
I appreciate the weather isn't the hotels fault but their handling of the situation and the overall first impressions weren't great. less
