Great staff, better than the hotel

As other reviewers have said, the drab exterior hides a recently refurbished interior. The public areas were in good order, and a smell of fresh paint in corridors suggests that the rooms are also being done. Our room seemed be to be on the waiting list. The wallpaper was torn in places, and the light coloured carpet showed several stains; an odd smell suggested they'd tried to clean them. A large CRT TV was in a corner on a stand on the floor, so low that we had to kneel to operate the controls, in the absence of a remote control. The view was of the shabby restaurant next door, and a flat roof with two sets of ducting and extractors; the extractors are switched off at night.
As we wanted to change before a family event, we called ahead to ask for an early check in. The receptionist was very helpful and arranged it for us by changing our room to one that had been empty the night before. (Maybe that's why we didn't get a sea view!)
We ordered food from the bar menu on the first evening. Steak and ale pie was OK - a dish of stewed steak with a puff pastry lid, and a pile of vegetables. The "catch of the day" was a sliver of fish in a slab of batter, probably frozen, deep fried and over cooked. A good selection of drinks is available at the bar, including one very good cask ale.
Breakfast is the usual buffet, with a good choice.
All the staff we met were friendly and helpful.
