Booked a night in the Baylis to have somewhere to stay relatively close to London for new years eve night to see a show. We decided to stay here based on the picture of the hotel exterior and the cost.
Firstly, many of the good reviews here are based on the venue as a place to hold a party or function, NOT based on it as a hotel. This is not a great hotel!
Secondly, the building shown is not the building the rooms are in. Instead you stay in a depressing annex attached to it. Receptionist immediately told us we had to pay more money to have the room before 2pm , even though it was ready and then told us they were holding more of our money than we paid, to be returned later. The room we had was 2 star at most. 1 bedside locker that looked liked it belonged in the 1950s and on the other side a plastic trolley with a phone. No bedside lamps. Coffee making is a farce: 1 sachet of regular, 1 of decaf. 1 small bottle of shower gel. All of this for 2 people. Extractor fan sounded like a diesel engine. Stained bed also (clearly visible too). Window blinds let plenty of light through.
We were put in a corridor with a lot of teenage kids from schools, I am assuming there for the new years eve party the night before or because its relatively close to Heathrow. The evening in the room consisted of them running from one room to another, setting off alarms and then getting yelled at repeatedly, and in very sweary language, for a long time. Same happened again in the morning. All this happened a stones throw from reception.
We didnt try the bar or restaurant as we just thought it was best to stay in the room. There is not much in the local area either, mainly takeaways. It is also difficult to find the hotel; a local taxi driver even struggled.
Also be aware of having a taxi called for you. We had one arrive that was filthy, we had no credentials for the driver and not even a display for what we were being charged.
One positive was Jing at reception who tried to make amends the next morning. It was still the worst hotel experience I have ever had, and thats comparing it to some poor 2 star hotels!
In short, I would advise staying elsewhere. Even the Holiday Inn express would have been a cleaner, better option. Do not be conned by the photo of the house or the good reviews! less
