We visited for dinner on Valentine’s night and an overnight stay. Over the years I’ve stayed in some great hotels but the rooms at Mount Pleasant are up there with the best. We had a junior suite which was enormous. A vast sleigh bed with sofa and chair and fantastic antique substantial furnishings. The only thing that let the accommodation down was the shower. The bathroom looks fabulous with a large whirlpool bath, twin basins and enormous walk in shower. One of the things I value when staying in top end hotels is a gorgeously powerful shower. The shower here looked very promising – an enormous rainfall shower head and a hand held attachment. The only problem was the water fell from the large head like the gentle pitter pat of an April shower rather than the storm force blast I’d hoped for. Despite that fully deserved a 5 star rating for the room.
Dinner wasn’t quite up to expectation. We knew there wasn’t an advertised Valentine’s Night event so were not expecting romantically named dishes for sharing and bright pink cocktails. However, it would have been nice to have a small gesture towards the night – a few heart shaped table sprinkles, a single rose in a vase on the table, anything really. As it was the restaurant had all the ambience of a service station eatery on a damp Thursday evening. I mentioned this to the Food and Beverage Manager when we left. He said the decision had been made not to do anything for Valentine’s as there was some work going on around the dining room (there was no disruption in the room itself) and they didn’t feel it right to charge more for a Valentine theme evening if the room was at its best. I did say that surely a few little gestures could have been included in the standard price to cheer the place up, but he didn’t seem really interested.
The food itself was good. The menu is compact, and it was a little disappointing that after a long deliberation the lamb my husband ordered was unavailable. It would have been nice if the server had mentioned this when handing us the menus. I had the veggie options of a beautifully cooked cheese souffle and arancini balls with spinach in a cream sauce. Husband had a salmon starter and duck with scallops to follow. All the dishes were well prepared and tasty.
This is a lovely hotel which I would heartily recommend. Just a shame a few small points let it down on this occasion. less
