Generally the accommodation, facilities, service staff and ambience was what one would expect from an historic local building conversion and gave a good impression that one was about to experience an aristocratic experience. Indeed from arrival, pleasant reception staff, to dinner we experienced nothing but willing assistance. It has to be said that we dined in the Ramblewood Inn which produced the required food timely, hot and with genuine pleasure.
A fairly pleasant stay in our high ceilinged room with an appropriate four poster bed was spoiled only by what I can only describe as a Blue Circle Cement mattress which I defy anyone other that a Hindu Guru to enjoy.
Then to the really irritating and insulting experience. BREAKFAST stated as being served from 0645 until 0945. Imagine entering a huge room full of dining tables as we did at 0925. Some used, some ready and some in a state of indecision. You are faced by five staff in conversation. You are ignored until such time as you initiate your arrival by saying "Good Morning" which is finally acknowledged with a reply! You then have to ask where to sit because the information is not proferred voluntarily. My wife goes to get fruit juice/cereals for both of us because of my mobility problems. There was no tomato juice which was advertised as being available. There was no member of staff to request the said item. Eventually a member of staff uttered the classic statement "has any-one asked you if you would like coffee or tea." I informed him that no that was not the case but that I would like two poached egs for my breakfast. These were delivered perfectly cooked, in time and added to sausage bacon and mushrooms that had been cooked, in my estimate, at 0645 for breakfast start. Not a match made in heaven. We needed some butter but could not find anything other than a generic margarine. A passing member of the dining room staff said "oh do you want butter? I'll find you some". Leaving my wife to follow to get what we wanted. I have never been so happy to leave a meal out as I was that day.
I had paid a lot extra for this overnight break for my wife on her 70th birthday and feel guilty because I chose a venue that not only failed to live up to my expectations but fell well short of the standards she deserves.
To add insult to such atrocius service I recieved a standard email from someone on behalf of the supposed Deputy General Manager at this hotel who stated that " I would like to apologise for not exceeding your expectations."
In all honesty I would have been happy to have my expectations met let alone exceeded. I also have to state that the email address had the following notation firstname.lastname@example.org. Ignored or hiding behind technology you decide.
I have taken no pleasure in writing this review as I prefer to see the positive side of establishments I stay. In this particular case I have reluctantly had to tell the truth. less
