I took my husband here for his birthday and a couple of days golf, prior to going on a week long holiday to Wales. I chose what looked like a delightful room that was described as having a four bed poster bed that I thiught would be quite romantic .On arrival, we were greeted by a very pleasant receptionist who gave us directions to our room which turned out to be some distance away. We were very disappointed to find that there was no lift as with two large suitcases, it was difficult getting the suitcases roung the bendy staircase but the bedroom was ok 2/3 star accomodation and adequate, however, the four poster bed consisted of nothing more than four bits of painted timber, one stuck in each corner of the bed, not at all like the last four poster bed my husband had booked in a different hotel which had character and beautiful drapes. We had a wander around outside but couldn't find anywhere close by within safe, well lighted walking distance to eat so were glad that we had booked to eat in the hotel restaurant.
When we arrived at the restaurant at the booked time, it was empty and there were no staff about so we waited just inside, someone popped in and looked us and then went away again so we continued to wait and wait. Eventually, somebody did come to look after us but it was quite obvious that they had not expected us so perhaps that explains the long wait and not particularly friendly service.
The menu did not offer very much by way of choice but was ok but I was not at all impressed with my main course, which was over cooked and, considering the price, was nothing special.
On the second day, we were out on the golf course, I only spectate but my husband was very impressed by the staff, the facilities and the course and would highly recommend it. It was a damp and somewhat chilly day so we arrived back at our room, cold and damp and ready for a hot shower. I went into the bathroom to find that all the towels were very damp and one of them was very dirty. I then had to trek all the way back to reception with the towels and asked for replacement ones so that I could take them back with me. I appreciate that I could have rang room service but there was a wedding going on and I know that the staff were very busy and we wanted to shower a soon as possible.
In the evening, we once more ventured into the dining room and again the service when we entered was, like the food, nothing special. I particularly remember the Lemon Tiramisu which was totally tasteless and quite unpalatable. My husband tasted it too and said it wasn't worth eating unless I was particularly hungry!. When the waitress came to take our dishes away, I thought she might have asked if everthing was ok with my dessert as I had not eaten it but she did not so I told her that I could not recommend it as it was tasteless, perhaps she could mention it to the chef. She seemed a little uneasy after she had told us that a couple on a previous day had made the made the same comment but she would mention it but I really appreciated her honesty and thanked her for it and also for the good service she had provided us with.
When we left, I went to reception to settle the bill and saw a different lady who asked me if we had enjoyed our stay and so I told her that apart from the golf, then it had not been a great success and I told her all the problems and disappointments that we had encountered including the disappointing evening meals which we had had to endure on two days because we had been unable to find a better alternative close by. I also told her that it was my practice to write reviews on Trip Advisor and that I would think long and hard before reviewing this particular hotel. Her response was she did not like to read write bad reviews about the hotel and it was not the fault of the hotel that there was nowhere else close by that we could have eaten at. I thought this to be quite an odd comment as I had not actually complained about the remoteness but had just mentioned it to explain why we had not gone elsewhere on the second night. I was expecting her to comment on the dirty/wet towels, poor food, 4 poster bed design etc. but she did not. I also think that elsewhere, the bill might have been reduced but I paid it in full and left never to return again. less
