We stayed for a Saturday night only. We had a 'superior double' room and breakfast: compared to the other options in the area, it was very inexpensive.
It's a small hotel in a lovely village. The staff were very pleasant when we arrived: checking in was no problem, and they booked a taxi from their usual company for us for later that evening. (Note: it would have been good to have been told that there is a 'minimum fare' of £15 during the day, and £20 in the evening because the taxi comes from Malmesbury. Quite a lot for a four mile trip down the road)
The room was spacious and airy with a comfy bed. Not the most recently decorated, but clean, tidy and well presented. The bathroom was small but adequate, with a shower mounted above the bath - very low water pressure in our room, but just about OK to get the soap out of your hair. We only noticed in stages, but the room had obviously been set up for a visit by a single guest. Reception were very apologetic, and happy to provide the additional glass and some teabags that we requested; but it was not until showering that we noticed only one bath towel - too late to ask!
Our room was next to a fire escape door, with a small platform outside. We were woken in the night by the smell of cigarette smoke wafting under our room door. In the morning, we discovered that the fire escape stair outside was used by staff as a smoking platform: most unpleasant in our 'no smoking' bedroom. (No idea whether it was staff or guests smoking in the middle of the night, but it was not good!)
Breakfast was interesting: a buffet of cereals, fruits, pastries, etc and the usual cooked menu. We waited for ages at the 'wait to be seated' notice and were then told to sit anywhere. After quite a while, a waiter asked if we would like toast, and tea or coffee, no offer of anything cooked, and was off in a flash. When we could catch his eye some time later, he did then take our order. We gave up trying to ask for a refill of coffee.
I suppose this was what we expected: nearly great! We weren't let down by the facilities: it was the attention to detail. With a little bit of effort, this could be the most fabulous little hotel. less
