The Best Western in Peckham stands right on the main road – you can't miss it, it's a large, impressive looking red brick building, with clean white brick trim, and a bright yellow Robin Reliant parked on the front lawn. Yes, you read that right. Trying to cash in on the TV series Only Fools and Horses, home of the fictional Trotters, the little yellow car represents Del Trotter's “business”. It doesn't stop there, as various catch phrases from the show are in evidence, sprinkled around the hotel.
Located on the Peckham Road it's on the main bus route into London – around minute ride – and Greenwich, maybe a little less. It's not on the underground system but the buses are many and frequent.
Our room (# 124, in the basement), thankfully, wasn't plastered with the likes of Lovely Jubbly, but was painted in a variety of bright greens, which, for a small room, made it feel somehwat claustrophobic). However, the bedd linens were clean and the bed comfortable. The layout of the room has potential safety issues, for instance, the door opens right into a wall – part of the bathroom which has been created within the room – so it would be easy to walk smack into it. On the front of this wall is a very large flat screen TV, the bottom corner of which is just ay eye, or forehead, level depending on your height – again, a potential hazard. A metal door stop is a permanent fixture on the floor a couple of inches to the left of the bottom of the bed – a real trip hazard. So, for a very small room, it could be tricky to negotiate, especially for someone with certain disabilities.
The bathroom, whilst equipped with everything you need from liquid soap to towels and a hairdryer, is so small one has tobe extremely flexible in order to dry oneself properly.
The view from the window is a brick wall in which lurk several air conditoner units, which are really noisy.
I was alarmed to see the fire doors along the hallway were wedged open! And speaking of alarms, they went off late one evening, and again in the early hours of the morning. The explanation we were given was that someone “had a shower and the steam set them off”. So this means that ALL the alarms go off, and something as simple as steam can trigger them! This seems odd to me, as surely if that were the case, they'd be screaming every few minutes.
Breakfast is served from 7am, and you will not be allowed to even choose a table before this as the breakfast voucher has to be handed to a member of staff who will take your order. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is standard hotel fare, but there is a good veriety of everything from cereal to fresh fruit.
We stayed here for three nights, and I'll be honest, had it been for longer I would have probably have asked for a different room. less
