..and notice I said "room", because as I understand it, there are better, more-recently-refurbished rooms in the Royale. I got 216, and I struck unlucky. Having initially being put in a single - which was in postage-stamp territory size-wise - the kind receptionist, seeing that Carson Wagonlit had gone and booked me a single (even though I'd ordered a superior double!), took pity and offered me a standard double.
I was there 3 nights, and slept around 10 hours in total. This was down to a combination of a mattress which was far too soft, stuffy hot room with no kind of air conditioning - not even a standalone fan, and thin walls. The only way to get at least a little air into the room was to open the window as wide as it would go - but this was of limited benefit because of the window's position in relation to the rest of the building. It also let in seagull cries from 4.30 am. The bathroom wasn't much better - a shower with a head not designed to be moved focused bang on the middle of the torso of my 5'6" frame, old, warped wood shelves... just in general the room was tired and in need of an update.
Such a shame, because there are some great elements to the Royale. Top of the list has to be the staff. Genuinely friendly, attentive and professional, here was a happy, motivated team. The food is also a plus. The dinner I had on the first night was excellent - some of the best posh fish and chips I've tasted. The breakfast was not quite on par with dinner (black pudding and mushrooms might have tipped the balance!), but still of a decent enough standard, and all the staff there were great.
So, this review might make you think that 2/5 is a bit harsh, but let's face it - the principle reason you stay in a hotel is to get some sleep at night, and that's especially important when you're on business. I'm sorry to say I wouldn't give the Royale another chance next time as this aspect is so important to me and I'm not prepared to take a risk on it. less
