The Hotel La Solara was recommended to us, and certainly lived up to our expectations in every way.
We arrived late on a Friday evening, even later than we expected as our flight was delayed. The coach transfer from the airport took the long and tedious drop off route round the Sorrento hotels before arriving at La Solara. It was close on 11pm before we arrived, but no problem! The porter was there to meet the coach, with a trolley to take our bags to reception. The hotel was so welcoming, and had a cold platter waiting for us in the restaurant, such a relief, and just what we needed to banish the coach journey. We new at that point we had found somewhere very special.
Refreshed, it was then up to our room, which completely bowled us over. As it was a special anniversary, I think we'd had our room upgraded, we'd booked a sea view, but this was a wonderful double room. Everything was beautifully decorated, and spotless throughout, (as was the whole hotel). The view from the balcony over the sea was absolutely stunning. The air conditioning worked perfectly, and quietly. The bed was a little on the firm side, but not uncomfortably so.
There's a road in front the hotel which is quite busy, but noise wasn't a problem. We were on the 4th floor.
All the staff in the hotel were so friendly, nothing was too much trouble. We'd booked half board, and the evening meals were generally excellent. There was a choice of dishes each night, and something for everyone. A welcome departure from the uninspired buffets in a lot of hotels. All the waiters in the restaurant were lovely, and service was always very efficient. Nello in particular was a real gem. The vast majority of the guests at the hotel were either British or American.
Entertainment in the evening was a little limited, but laid back and enjoyable, and fitted the character of the large bar area.
Breakfast was extensive, but my only small criticism was that a little more variation from day to day would have been nice. There was always fresh fruit salad, cheese and cold meat platter, various cakes, and hot dishes - scrambled and boiled eggs, bacon, hash browns, and sometimes sausage. Plus plenty of rustic bread.
The pool area was excellent, with crystal clear pool, and plenty of sunbeds for all. It was never crowded. One side of the pool had awnings which could be extended to provide shade for when it got too hot. They seem to have thought of everything!
There's also a lovely little beach about 1 Km from the hotel, an easy 15 minute walk going down, but it is very steep, so double that coming back! (watch out for the sunbed/umbrella con on the beach, the first person we came to was charging 50 Euro! We moved on, everywhere else was 15. Great beach-side restaurants there too.
Last but not least, the free shuttle into Sorrento, what would we have done without it! A real godsend, it ran like clockwork on the hour right up until 11pm. We used it so many times, just to go into Sorrento, or to the station for our trips to Pompeii and Vesuvius. At one point our train back was delayed, and we enquired the cost of a taxi: 25-30 Euro for the 7 minute trip! Needless to say, we waited for the next shuttle, whiling away the time with a cocktail or two. It's about a half mile walk from the drop off point to the Circumvesuviana train station.
We were at La Solara for a week, and the time flew by. It's in a scenic location just a few kms outside of the town, not a problem with the shuttle. We were sad to leave, and would not hesitate to stay there again if we return to Sorrento. Definitely 100% recommended! less
