We first visited Sorrento in 1987 and was one of the places that we holidayed in the 1980’s that we wanted to go back to .We stayed then in St Agnello and my lasting memory was the traffic noise and a church bell ringing every 15 minutes. This time we wanted to stay somewhere where it was more quiet. After doing a lot of researching we finally decided on La Solara. We stayed the last 2 weeks in October and the weather was warm in the sun but it was a bit chilly in the evenings. There was a mixture of different ages staying at the hotel from babies to pensioners. I booked through Thompsons ( now TUI) a room with a sea view and terrace. Our room was on the 3rd floor and it was the middle room of the 5 rooms with the large sun terrace .We had a lovely view. The room was facing the front by the road and we found the room very quiet. There was some traffic noise but we didn’t find it at all disturbing. The terrace had a table and two chairs and two sun beds .
The terrace must be lovely to sit in the summer when the days are longer. It was an hours journey by taxi from the airport and our room was ready when we arrived. Our cases were brought to our room. The room was adequate. There was no comfy chair to sit on to watch TV in the evenings. We brought in the chairs from the terrace in the evenings but as there were no cushions on these chairs we used the pillows from the beds as soft back rests.
The hotel is spotless and the staff are a credit to hotel. It is the first time from all our travels in all the different hotels we have stayed in that our room had always been cleaned by the time we returned in the afternoon, even when we got back early. We were never disturbed at all while we were in our room by the cleaners. They always waited until we went out before they cleaned the room. We were very impressed with this. There is a kettle and the tea, coffee and milk is replenished every day.
Breakfast consisted of a self service buffet breakfast and there was always a table available. There is a toast making machine, bacon, scrambled eggs , boiled eggs ,sausage, cold meats and cheese, cake, fresh juice, yogurt. There is a machine were you can get different types of coffee plus hot chocolate and hot water to make tea. The tea was always hot .If you are like me and usually have a more than on one cup of tea at breakfast you can only make tea in a cup so have to keep getting up and down to have a fresh cup. There were no tea pots so that you could have a pot of tea at breakfast. I did ask for a tea pot and one was brought but it was a large tea pot so it would not go in the space and I had to fill it up with cups of hot water. After a couple of days I gave this idea up . There is only space for a cup. Also the plates for breakfast are just tea plates so you need a couple of plates to put the different items on.
Dinner is waiter service apart from the salad bar where you can help yourself. The meals were excellent and always hot . You can order wine and they keep any unused wine for your use the next evening. The water was 2.50 euros for a litre bottle which I thought was excellent value for money and you can take away any unused water for use for the next evening if you wish. We were very impressed with the restaurant staff and with how the restaurant was managed.
The shuttle bus service is excellent and was always on time and stops in a very convenient place . it runs every hour .If you go down the steps where the bus stops in Sorrento, turn right at the bottom and walk along the road you soon come to Tasso Square. If you do not want to walk down the steps, cross the road ,turn right take the first road and at the end turn right and you end up at Tasso Square.it is a very short walk to reach Tasso Square from where the shuttle bus stops.
If you want to go into Sorrento earlier or return earlier than when the shuttle bus leaves there is a regular bus service that stops by the hotel.
The public transport is excellent and it is so easy to go to Pompeii and Herculaneum by train. The station is only a 5 minute walk from where the shuttle bus drops you off. Cross the road and turn right and after a very short walk you will see the station. The train is every 30 minutes and at October 2017 prices the journey to Pomeii was 2 Euro 40 cents one way and to Herculaneum was 2 Euros 90 cents .You will need to have small change when paying for the train tickets. We did not have to wait in a long queue to buy the entrance tickets once we arrived at the two sites.
We went on the Thompsons trip to Salerno /Paestum .We would liked to have gone to Paestum on our own but as it was not an easy trip to get to Paestum using public transport.
We did however managed to visit Villa San Marco and Villa Arianna. These two sites are free entry and are brilliant sites to look around.
If we went back to Sorrento we would stay again at this hotel. less
