The hotel is situated right in the centre of the town, great location with parking on sight (always a bonus) The hotel is quite traditional, decor in some areas a little dated. Reception staff checked us in pretty quickly and finding our room was simple for a old building. Our room allocation was nice, we had a view overlooking the shops in Ambleside. The room was quite dated, I think it's ready for a little refurb, this said size was ok, we had everything we needed and it was clean.
We decided to use the spa facilities which were very good, all areas were very clean, pool area was nice, as was the saunas. There's even a hot tub outside but we didn't use this. Changing rooms have showers, shower gel etc and lockers are provided for your clothing. There are also hair dryers in the ladies changing rooms, not sure about the men's. The gym isn't a big but in my opinion is big enough to provide all the equipment you need for a gym session. Equipment looked relatively new and up to date.
The bar/lounge area is pretty big, lots of seating in public areas. The lounge goes through from one room to another and the decor in these areas is lovely. Although it did lack atmosphere, there was no music on in the lounge which I do feel public areas such as the lounge should have a little background music just to create a little but of ambience.
We decided to eat in the restaurant that evening, it was easy enough to get in as it seemed the hotel was pretty quite. We ordered a bottle of white wine, asked if we could have an ice bucket as I prefer my wine very chilled and were told we may not be able to have one as there were no ice buckets!! In a restaurant, in a hotel that was quiet that particular night and no ice bucket surprised us. Eventually we did get an ice bucket but we had already started our meal by then. When our wine was brought over it was just left with us, any restaurant we have been to the wine is opened at the table by the waiting staff. When someone did come over, (a different waiter to the one that we ordered from and brought the wine to the table), he did open and pour the wine, but there was no checking it was the correct wine and he never asked if we would like to taste the wine first. This waiter seemed to be a senior member of staff as we overheard him explaining to a younger member how to put a cloth over the wine bottle and certain correct etiquette in table service!!!During the whole time we were in the restaurant there was not one top up of wine,(we don't mind pouring our own by the way),but you expect a basic standard of service in a restaurant. The decor was nice but the paper napkins let the dressed table down a little(just a minor thing), also there was no music in the restaurant, it would have just created a nicer atmosphere as the restaurant wasn't very busy.
We did have a nice stay here, it was the experience in then restaurant that let the hotel down a little. The young waiter was polite and did everything he thought was right, however I do feel he was left to do this while the the slightly older (still young) waiter did very little. I think a little more training and contribution from the more experienced waiter would have helped. This said we will probably try the hotel again to see if we have a different experience second time round. less
