The Peak District's very own spa town, Buxton, boasts an exquisite opera house. Every year since 1979, the Buxton Festival has created its own niche in the operatic world by unearthing some rare pieces. There's a literature strand too.
In 2011 the operas include Donizetti's Maria di Rohan, Handel's Saul (with Harry Christophers and his Sixteen), Thomas' Mignon, Mark-Anthony Turnage's Greek, Cimarosa's The Italian Girl in London and Telemann's Pimpinone. There's also Stephen McNeff's award-winning Tarka the Otter (originally commissioned by the Two Moors Festival) staged as this year's community opera.
In between the opera performances there are a host of concerts and literary figures to fill audience's days with culture.
