Levens Hall
The eccentric Topiary Gardens at Levens Hall, Kendal, are world famous. Four gardeners spend five months a year snipping the topiary into columns, pyramids and all sorts of abstract shapes. Kids (and adults) love it.
Located on the edge of England's picturesque Lake District, the gardens were laid out by Guillaume Beaumont, a French garden designer who learnt his trade under Le Nôtre at Versailles and later designed Hampton Court's original gardens.
The layout of the yew and box hedges has remained unchanged for 300 years, since they were first designed at the behest of a Jacobean nobleman, Colonel Grahme, in 1694.
