Hastings Bonfire Celebrations
Stealing a march on most other bonfires, Hastings Beach is the venue for the Hastings Bonfire Celebrations. The spectacular torchlit procession, starting from The Stade, bonfire and fireworks commemorate the Battle of Hastings, as well as the traditional gunpowder plot.
Always held on the nearest Saturday to 14 October - the date of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 - the procession is part of the two-month-long Sussex Bonfire celebrations, which starts with Mayfield's late September blaze, marking the execution of four Protestant martyrs on 24 September 1556, under Mary Tudor.
Most bonfires, however, are reserved for 5 November, the date that Guy Fawkes and co's gunpowder treason and plot was foiled.
