Oldmeldrum Sports & Highland Games

First held in 1930, the Oldmeldrum Highland Games promises a spectacular day out for thousands of spectators.

Originally started to raise money for a Cocoa Fund for children of the town (the first Games raised £36), the games have been held every year but one (at the end of the Second World War) since. Now profits are shared between a number of charities.

Among the variety of traditional events - Highland dancing, piping and the "heavy" sports, shot-putting, hammer-throwing, tug o' war and caber-tossing - there are special events each year, which have included aerial displays. Entertainment spills out from the traditional day of the games, with a show the night before, and often a five-a-side football competition on the Sunday.

Caber tossing: a traditional Highland Games competitive activity
