The Stanley Spencer Gallery

The Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham is devoted exclusively to the artist, in the village where he was born and spent most of his life.

Spencer was strongly influenced by the river and his religious beliefs, and the gallery occupies the former Victorian Methodist Chapel where he was taken as a child to worship. Following receipt of a Heritage Lottery Fund, the building has been renovated and reopened in 2007.

The gallery has a permanent collection of his work, including the unfinished masterpiece Christ Preaching at Cookham, together with letters, documents and memorabilia. Temporary exhibitions take place too.

Please note: from November to Easter the gallery is only open at weekends.
