Dundee Contemporary Arts

Opened in March 1999, Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) encompasses five floors of galleries, cinemas, artists' facilities and education resources as well as the University of Dundee visual research centre and a hugely popular Cafe Bar.

First mooted back in the 1980s, the centre came to fruition via a three-way partnership between Dundee City Council, the University of Dundee and Dundee Contemporary Arts Ltd, with the avid support of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD), that became assimilated within the University, and both the Seagate Gallery and the Printmakers' Workshop. The college has a growing reputation as one of the top art colleges in the UK, with schools of Fine Art, Design and Television and lmaging.

The building accommodates the Print Studio, which offers classes for budding printmakers, as well as the Cinema which extends what was the part-time Regional Film Theatre and now offers the latest releases alongside art house films and retrospectives, as well as a special children's programme, Movie Kids.

The galleries offer space for local artists as well as a major exhibition schedule. The range of artists and artforms was exemplified in the opening exhibition, Prime, which included work from Andy Warhol, Callum Innes, Anish Kapoor and Joseph Beuys. Since then the likes of architect Frank Gehry, Olafur Eliasson (who went on to create The Weather Project in Tate Modern's Turbine Hall), Ann Lislegaard, Thomas Demand, Ergin Çavuþoðlu and Finnish duo Tommi Grönlund and Petteri Nisunen have all been featured, as well as local artists born or working in Scotland, such as Will Maclean, Simon Starling and Richard Wright.
