Dean Gallery
The Dean Gallery was opened in 1999 to complement the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, which stands opposite, and to house the latter's collection of Dada and Surrealist art and work by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi. A converted orphan hospital built in the 1830s, it is yet another of the Scottish National Galleries' lavish and prestigious museums, and an Edinburgh art "must-see".
It is the first new gallery dedicated to the whole of 20th-century art to open in Scotland since the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art moved to larger premises in 1984. The imposing grade-A listed building has been transformed by architects Terry Farrell and Partners into a futuristic gallery. Important features of the conversion include a gallery fitted out as a library for the display of artists' books; a suite of air-conditioned galleries for temporary exhibitions; a large shop; a café and a specially equipped education room.
