North West England - Food & Drink

Food & Drink

Cumberland Sausage may be the most famous of the Lake District's meat products, but try Tatie Pot, made from Herdwick mutton, and accompany it with Cumberland Mustard from Alston, England's highest market town. In Lancashire, try Lancashire Cheese and fiercely guarded Black Pudding recipes. For more cheese, gorge fresh and mild Cheshire Cheese. Liverpool's Scouse (potato stew) is also the name for the local accent. Sweet treats include Blackpool rock, Chorley Cake pastries, Ormskirk gingerbreads or Eccles Cakes, "sweet patties" of fruit, brandy and puff pastry made in Eccles, Salford since the 18th century. They are so good that the Puritans tried to ban them!

North West England - Romance

Romance

Visit remote Ennerdale Water, the westernmost of the lakes, where Bill Clinton proposed to Hilary in 1973. South of Wilmslow, take the red sandstone path of Alderley Edge for dramatic views across the Cheshire plains. In Liverpool, the Mersey Ferry is a must, with views onto the Pier Head and Liverpool's dramatic waterfront.
