The Peak District National Park is thought to be the second-most visited national park in the world (after Mount Fuji National Park in Japan). It is easy to see why this is the case. The rugged green landscape epitomises what makes the English countryside so popular around the world. Green mountains roll downwards towards calm crystal lakes in the interlocking valley troughs. Several of these waters provide water sports for hikers looking for something a bit more active and challenging.

A number of small and peaceful market towns and villages are dotted throughout the countryside – little islands of gentle activity in the surrounding green seas of calm. Hayfield and Edale sit peacefully in the High Peak of Derbyshire, providing easy access to some of the country’s favourite high-altitude walks.

Visit Peveril Castle, an ornate ruined early-medieval fortress that overlooks the village of Castleton. It sits proudly over Hope Valley, a beacon of Norman power across the ancient landscape.

The elegant and inviting town of Buxton is known as the cultural capital of the Peak District. It’s an atmospheric and historical settlement, famous for its mineral springs and architecture. For such a small town, the volume and concentration of such beautiful and noteworthy architecture is impressive. Imposing but beautiful grey-stone buildings rise up in every direction, displaying memories and influences of a number of different architectural periods.

The town is an essential place to visit during a Peak District countryside break. There are a number of historic buildings and landmarks, essential to any keen historian. Visit the Devonshire Dome, converted from the Great Stables by Henry Currey in 1859. The iconic Buxton Opera House is the highest opera house in the country while the Natural Baths and Pavilion Gardens provide a place for the tired tourist to settle back and relax.

It is, however, of course the scenery and access to the great outdoors that are the main pull of the Peak District. There is an extensive network of footpaths and long-distance trails that provide access to all areas. Admiring the views from any peak in the evening is a breathtaking and a truly memorable experience.

Make sure you visit the strangely named Kinder Scout, the tallest peak in the East Midlands’s, which reaches an impressive 2,087 feet.

Book a countryside break in The Peak District for a truly memorable holiday. An unbeatable escape form the humdrum of daily life.
