The Fans' Best Room in the World

by | Nov 04, 2014

A filming diary.

Working with Best Western gets me to many varied parts of Britain, and this time our film crew is in the stunning cathedral city of Wells in the heart of Somerset.

The stunning cathedral dominates the town, and was opened in 1239. The hotel is a youngster in comparison, but even the hotel dates from 1422, that’s when its first mention is recorded, and apparently it was good back then too.

The hotel is loved for its fine locally sourced food, as a beautiful wedding venue, and as a comfortable home from home for its many corporate and leisure guests. In fact returning guests are greeted “Welcome home” and I’m sure most guests wish this was their home.

The Swan has 54 rooms and 5 self catering apartments and while all are comfortable, we have to focus our attention on the extra special Cathedral Suite. I’ve been fortunate to visit some very special hotel rooms over time, some with great views, others with sumptuous appointments, but few achieve the overall feeling of comfort, quiet luxury and delight of The Swan’s Cathedral Suite. It would be wonderful even without the view – but then when you combine the uninterrupted view of one of Britain’s finest cathedrals, and the style offered by the room and you understand why it was voted the Best Western Fans’ “Best Hotel Room in the World”!

Uninterrupted view? It wasn’t always thus. An enterprising owner a couple of hundred years back took the opportunity to buy and demolish the two houses opposite the hotel that stood in the way of the view – that wouldn’t be allowed today, but we’re all glad that it happened.

There’s so much to say about The BEST WESTERN PLUS Swan Hotel at Wells that I think there’ll have to be another blog post soon, but right now the sun is coming around to the front of the cathedral and we must capture that before the clouds come over again.
