Did a 1 night stay at The Queen, through a special Hallmark dinner, bed and breakfast summer promotion. The package also included a drink before dinner, a late check out and a 10% discount voucher for nearby Cheshire Oaks.
Our stay didn't get off to the best of starts. You have to pay to park your car! We've never stayed at a hotel before where you have to pay for car parking. I understand it's because of it's proximity to the city's railway station, but surely the hotel should cover this, or deduct it from your bill.
Anyway, we were a bit early (we arrived about 12.00 noon) and our room wouldn't be ready until 3.00pm. This wasn't a problem, so we left our luggage with reception, and walked into the city centre.
We had pre-booked an afternoon tea for 3.00pm (not part of the package) so we returned for that. This was served in the Albert Room, and was certainly impressive. Heaps of tasty sandwiches, cakes, scones with jam and clotted cream, large pot of tea and prosecco, all served by a very friendly waitress. We couldn't eat it all, and we had to bear in mind we had booked our evening meal for 7.45pm! After eating what we could, we checked with reception, and our room was now ready, and our luggage had already been taken up for us.
The room was very nice, with a flat screen tv, tea and coffee making facilities, and a nice modern bathroom.
Out of our window, we had a nice view of the Italian garden. So nice in fact, we just had to go down there with a nice cold drink!
Prior to dinner, we had a drink (included in our package) from the Waiting Room, and we took this through to the Kings Grill where we were shown to our table for dinner. There wasn't a great deal of choice on the menu for those staying on the dinner bed and breakfast package, but we were both very pleased with both our starters and mains, in terms of presentation, taste and portions. Our big mistake, was ordering a dessert. This would be an additional £6.00 each, and both desserts were tiny, not worth anything like £6.00! But overall, evening meal was delicious.
Unfortunately, our room didn't have air conditioning, and it was a very humid night, so sleeping was uncomfortable. Apparently, because it's such an old hotel, they're not allowed to install air con. However, i understand they do have air con in the more modern Kings Quarter apartments.
Breakfast was served in the Jubilee Room. It was buffet style, but there was lots of choice, and everything was fresh and delicious
To summarise, The Queen is a beautiful old hotel, with brilliant, friendly staff throughout. The only downsides were having to pay for car parking, and lack of air conditioning in the Queens rooms.
We'd definitely stay here again, especially if Hallmark hotels do more of these package deals, but perhaps not during the summer months. less
