Starting with a positive note, the freshly cooked English breakfast was very good, although the star is definitely the Lincolnshire sausages that they buy from Mountains, just round the corner. Make sure you are there to buy fresh from the butcher. Unfortunately they are closed on Mondays and I missed out. Also very positive is the fabulous staff. All without exception were friendly and helpful. However, I am disappointed to report that as a dog owner, I was allocated the worst of the rooms available. I had stated that I wanted a quiet room when I booked. My room, 106, was above the bar. On Saturdays the bar is very busy (with one particularly noisy man with an annoying laugh) and does not close until 12 midnight. Don't bother trying to sleep before then unless you are deaf or have excellent ear plugs. When I asked about this on checking out, I was told that anyone bringing a dog was given those particular rooms. I was told to make sure that if I ever returned to mention that this room was not acceptable. The room itself was huge, with a massive bed just for me. However, when I realised my feet were still hanging from the bottom of the bed (I'm quite tall) I discovered that the bed was actually two twins pushed together and made up as a super king. The furniture in the room is pretty shabby. The wall TV is placed to the side of the bed, so you will get a crick in the neck if you choose to watch TV from the bed. There is a nice armchair, but placed in the corner by the window so will have to be moved to beside the wardrobe if you want to sit comfortably to watch TV. I suggest changing the layout completely and replace the huge bed with a standard double.
I was very pleased that this hotel offered free accommodation for my dog. He was extremely well-behaved and all the reception staff made a great fuss of him. However, I was disappointed that we were placed in the ghetto of the worst of the rooms available in the hotel. I joined the membership scheme and thought I might get an upgrade, as advertised. Unfortunately, Best Western seems to have muddled up my membership application. It also seems that as a dog owner I would not be a recipient of this particular reward.
Final positive: the hotel is in an excellent location. Final negative: the promised treats and goodies for my dog were in the room, with a compliments slip that told me there was a ball for him as well as treats and a chew. There was no ball. When I told reception they made sure that he had a ball later that day, so again great staff. It's all in the details though BW. You could have had a really good review, but it's those little things that have upset me and have been quite a big disappointment. Thank goodness for those wonderful sausages. less
