Cannot wait to go back.
This West Grange Hotel is situated out in the country, east of Newbury, just off the A4. This must be one of the hidden gems in the hotel business. Yes, it appears to be in the middle of nowhere, yet it is only 10 minutes into Newbury and the A34 and 20 minutes into Reading and M4. It is "PERFECT".
We arrived at the hotel on a Groupon offer and were immediately taken by it's ideal location. It was smartly presented, set in it's own grounds with a wonderful area to walk and explore. Parking was easy, with all spaces in a close proximity to the hotel. We were warmly welcomed by a charming young man, who was willing to lend a hand with whatever we required. He explained the set-up of the hotel, giving us the time schedule for dinner and breakfast, pointing out to us where the bar and dining room were situated. 1st class service! He led us to the lift, opening the relevant doors, making our 30 second walk easy.
The Best Western West Grange Hotel has only 2 floors, ground floor for eating and drinking, 1st floor for all accommodation rooms. All room numbers were clearly sign posted, impossible to lose your room. On entering our room, everything was spotlessly clean and laid out well. Plenty of hanging space in the wardrobe area, with plenty of coat hangers of decent strength. The bed looked enormous, and was, fresh linen everywhere. Bathroom facilities were included in the spotless category and included all the necessary items required for your stay. Our room was on the inside run of the hotel, so we were rewarded with a lovely view of the internal courtyard, complete with a delightful running water fall system. There was no intrusive noise to be had anywhere. My mother's room was situated just opposite ours, on the outside of the hotel. Her room was much the same as ours, spotlessly clean, all where you expected it to be including the tea/coffee and biscuits alongside the kettle. If there was any advantage with her room, it was that she overlooked open countryside.
On our 1st night, I wanted to have something in my room instead of going down to have an evening meal in the dining room. This was solely due to the fact that Wales were playing Ireland in the rugby 6 nations tournament. So, at 19.00, I rang down to reception and inquired if room service was available, " no problem sir, what would you like? ". I placed my order and expected to wait at least 30 minutes for delivery. By 19.15 I was sat in front of the TV, enjoying my starter of chicken and malt whisky pate, with a lovely salad and 2 pieces of warm, buttered toast. I opened my 1st bottle of Speckled Hen beer and waited for kick-off. During the match, I also devoured my main course of mature cheese and chutney on ciabatta bread, along with a further 2 bottles of beer, thoroughly enjoying the food, which was excellent and fresh, the beer, one of my all time favourites, and the crowning glory, Wales beat Ireland!
My wife and my mother went and dined in the dining room and both commented, " excellent meal " Breakfast the next morning was also top class, laid out invitingly with virtually all that you could desire. It was the customary, ' self service ' type that you commonly get in the majority of hotels nowadays, but everything was hot and fresh, even though we weren't in for breakfast until 9.40. Nothing was any trouble and we were treated well and politely.
The second night we all ate in the dining room and once again the meal was " excellent ", the wine was extremely good and the service was second to none.
The following day, at breakfast, we were all talking about how good the staff were, how courteous and polite they were, but mainly how ' happy ' they all came across.
I cannot recommend this Best Western West Grange Hotel highly enough and would say that if you were looking for a good value, comfortable, quiet few days away, then this is most definitely top of your list. If you want a more " upbeat " few days away, then this hotel must be in serious contention as you have Reading only a short distance, Newbury even closer and even the attraction of Windsor is no more than a 45 minute drive away. You certainly won't get a better quality stay in 95% of hotels in this country and be able to walk away with a great big smile on your faces. less
