Having read some of the other reviews, I was aware of the location of the Summerhill- needless to say though it's one of the more unusual locations and had I not been warned it would have come as a bit of a shock. On the other hand, if you are in need of frozen goods (farmfoods) takeaway pizza (dominoes) or fancy a bet,you really can't beat it!
I was a little uneasy about the shared parking- and I would be interested in knowing whether the shops or the hotel were opened first. Despite this, the hotel seems to go the extra mile to make up for any deficiencies in location. But if you are a bit of peace and quiet, this hotel really isn't for you.
Checkin was efficient and friendly, I was given a room on the second floor. No direct lift to this floor oddly. Decor was lovely, although corridor did smell a bit of a gym changing room.
My room was compact but had everything you'd need: desk, LCD TV, wifi. Bed was firm but comfortable. Shower (with one of the largest heads I've seen !) plenty of hot water And toiletries provided. I am a stickler for cleanliness, and there wasn't room for concern.
I was facing the rear of the shops, so did have associated noise: fans, deliveries, as well as the smell. Not much the hotel can do about this, although I don't think it was busy on my stay so I would consider this room to be one of the poorer ones. The room was quite stuffy when I entered and whilst the window could be opened ( and not restricted like many) this let the noise in- I reckon rooms on this side of the hotel would be similar.
Wifi was reliable, but no good for streaming. The highlight most certainly was the hamper- 4 bottles of water, chocolates, biscuits, juice. Took some convincing that they were complimentary, but a really nice gesture. I've stayed at hotels on a much higher price point which don't offer such things, so they were much appreciated.
Apart from the aforementioned noise outside, I was not disturbed- walls seem to be adequately sound proofed.
Yes I would recommend this hotel, there have been obvious attempts at improvements. It's location is certainly a negative, but that won't change. If you are staying for a few days, or easily disturbed, I would request a room away from the shops loading area. less
