We frequently travel to Flagstaff. We usually stay at one of the hotels located along Milton Rd. A friend recommended the Best Western Pony Soldier located on Historic Route 66 (now Business 40 / 180). Like many of the hotels in Flagstaff that are along Route 66, the Best Western Pony Soldier is older, but it is very well kept up an clean. We were traveling with family and both our rooms were very spacious. They were both single king beds rooms, but were setup almost like a mini-suite; there was a couch, desk, 2 chairs & TV in an area adjacent to the bedroom area. This other room also had its own bathroom. The main area had the king bed as well as its own TV, mini-refrigerator and microwave. Two separate air conditioners as well. The room I stayed in was right at the end of the hallway by the stairs and vending machines. I’m a light sleeper but never heard any stairway or vending machine noise, and the hotel was very busy. We did pickup some noise from the room above, but not too bad.
The breakfast buffet at this hotel is excellent! It in a building adjacent to the main building. It has some seating outside so our dog was able to eat with us. There was a selection of eggs, bacon, sausage, hash brown potatoes, biscuits & gravy, waffles, a pancake machine (haven’t encountered one of those before), bagels, toast, cereals, yogurt, fresh fruit, juice, coffee & teas. There was a bus load of kids from some athletic competition staying at the hotel and they cleaned the place out pretty quick, however unlike some hotels we have stayed at with free breakfasts, this one very rapidly replenished the supplies after just a short wait. They didn’t run out of anything.
If you are traveling with dogs like our family was, you will really enjoy the small grassy dog run along the east side of the parking lot. It’s well shaded with trees. My only complaint about that area is that I wish the irrigation system had 2 zones; once the sprinklers come on the entire run is sprayed.
Another nice thing for travelers with dogs is that this hotel is very close to the Barkmaster off-leash dog park located within the Bushmaster Park. You are only about 2 blocks from the park as the crow flies, but you will have to drive about a mile or more through a residential neighborhood to get to Bushmaster Park. This hotel is also much closer to Flagstaff’s famous Buffalo Park with its beautiful walking trails. Took us just 7 minutes to get there and you avoid the congested downtown traffic if you come from the east side where this hotel is located.
We will be sure to stay at this hotel again. less
