The Gonville Hotel is a Best Western plus hotel and although I tend to find Best Westerns to be a bit dated and worn looking I was drawn to this hotel by its location and reviews and, as luck had it, I was right to make this our choice of hotel for our recent visit to Cambridge as, although this hotel is no oil painting on the outside, the inside is a totally different story.
The communal areas are tastefully decorated, light, bright and airy and the minute you step inside the Gonville, a warm welcome and exceptional service awaits. From its reception, to bar, to dining areas, this is a hotel that takes its customer care very seriously and is obviously proud of what appears to be an excellent track record in the delivery of quality and professionalism at all times.
The hotel is well situated and is in easy reach of the main shopping and dining areas in the City and within easy access of the main attractions. This is the perfect place to rest your head and I can highly recommend the hotel for its location, service, price and comfort.
We opted for a superior room (well worth paying just a few pounds extra for and I would totally recommend these rooms for any visitor). Our room was situated at the front of the hotel with a very pleasant view. The hotel itself is located, on what appeared to be the main road through Cambridge, and our room overlooked one of the many green squares/spaces which are dotted around the town. My initial concern was that our proximity to the main thoroughfare would affect the quality of our sleep. This was, however, not the case and apart from the occasional late night emergency siren we were lucky enough to be afforded 2 very good and comfortable nights’ sleep. The large bed was extremely comfortable as were the pillows, the linen crisp and white. The superior rooms are well decorated and furnished and extremely spacious and we were even afforded a complimentary turn down service.
We found the bathroom to also be very spacious and was decorated and furnished to a high standard, well maintained and very clean providing good quality toiletries, dressing gown and slippers.
The room itself was exceptionally clean and well maintained, providing their occupants with an iPad for personal use during your stay, good TV channels, excellent coffee maker (coffee pods) along with complimentary water and soft drinks (albeit there was no fridge to chill them in). We found plenty of wardrobe space but I was intrigued to find no drawer space, this I did find just a little odd!
The room rate included a full English breakfast which was an excellent start to the day albeit somewhat slow on delivery. However, I got the feeling that this is because every breakfast was cooked to order (hence the delay) and which can only be an improvement on the some of the dried out/left out/help yourself buffets I have had the misfortune to endure in numerous hotel stays.
There was free and extremely reliable Wi-Fi throughout the hotel which was an absolute bonus as so many hotel chains these days tend to use internet access as yet another means to part the guest from their money offering it only as an “extra”.
I found everywhere within the hotel was light and airy and exceptionally clean and the hotel gave an air of having undergone a recent redecoration and/or overhaul.
We found the staff helpful and polite and appeared more than happy to go out of their way to ensure your stay was comfortable and pleasant. Nothing appeared too much of an effort for them and they were keen and ready to assist in any way they could. One tiny little thing though was that whilst waiting to order at the bar, the staff kept popping off to help out elsewhere (dining area for food etc) which could sometimes created a bit of a wait. Other than that I have no complaints whatsoever with the hotel or the service we received during our specific stay.
One recommendation for the bar, might be to offer up a few cocktails. We often visit the Best Western hotel in Bath for drinks and socialising and this hotel, in the chain, offers a small but good range of cocktails and, personally, I would have liked to see such a range on offer here. It makes a pleasant change to the normal beer/wine and spirits. Obviously this is not a complaint or prerequisite merely my observation.
Highly recommended and my tip – go for a superior room as worth that bit extra. less
