Good value for a family if you spend the day at Disney and not at a motel - easy walk to Disney
Stovall's has been there forever - it seems. I commented to the desk staff about how the reception area's decor reminded me of the late sixties, and they said that many features were original from 1968 (and in excellent condition). Ah, that was a more innocent time, yes? And it was certainly a different Disneyland as well... but this review is about Stovall's, and it's a good review.
Stovall's is an old property, but it's been renovated. Most rooms have two full or queen sized beds. It's a bit tight, but I've had and seen far less spacious accommodations. There's a separate room for shower and commode with the sink in the room for all to use. At one time the property probably had an exposed clothing / coat rack - but it's been replaced by an armoire. Rooms have a small fridge and microwave.
The buildings are two to three stories tall with exterior doors (no interior corridors). Elevator access is available to most rooms, though there are some that do not have elevator access from what I could see.
Although the property is old, it's in very good repair. We've stayed here before, and the rooms were always neat and clean - with this visit no exception. The decor and furniture are in good repair. If you like earth tones, particularly, brown, you'll find the color scheme appealing.
The property has a very good sized fitness center, that is quite respectable - certainly better than what I've found many big-chain properties (and I've been Gold, Diamond, etc...). It also has two good-sized pools plus a Jacuzzi. And... it even has a topiary garden. The topiary garden is a throw-back to 1968, clearly, and I really like that it's still there. Hat's off to the owners of this independent property for keeping something so randomly neat and pleasing.
The included "continental" breakfast is a cut above what you can get at many large chain properties. The apples and bananas were actually good. The variety of cereals, donuts, rolls, and beverages were good. Is it the Ritz? No, but it's not to be expected. Are the eggs from powder? Most likely, but you get an offering w/ chorizo which was pretty decent. Tortillas are also available, and the salsa was surprisingly good - better than some restaurants. You can have decent bacon strips, and the ham is a cut above what I've seen other spots. Be aware, that it will get crowded with park-goers, but the dining area is large there is exterior seating, and folks seem to move along quickly.
The front desk staff was helpful, quick, and cheerful - really as good as you can find anywhere.
Do note that Stovall's charges for parking on a daily basis, and there's a 17% tax.
One of the best features of the property is that it's at the corner of Katella and Disney Drive. You can easily walk to the Disney parks. There's no need to catch a bus or drive. We figured about 15 minutes to walk door-step to door-step through "downtown disney." The trip is shorter to California adventure if you walk through the resort - but you can only do that after 11 AM. Note that Disney is now checking bags and running everyone through metal detectors at the entrance to downtown disney.
Overall, if you're focused on spending time in the parks, and your accommodations are for sleeping, then Stovall's is an excellent value by comparison. less
