Where to start, the hotel is a full on building site and should not, in our opinion be open to the public during the works.
I had read the Trip Advisor reports before we arrived, so had phoned the hotel and was assured that the work would be no problem at the weekend, and that we would be allocated a quiet room. Friday when we arrived the site was full on work site, vans everywhere, workmen throughout the hotel, areas boarded off, but we assumed that by Saturday all would be quiet. Mistake, woken at 6 by delivery lorry and then work noise at 8.
Our room was small, cold and badly designed (double bed with about 1ft between it and the window), with a 4 inch hole in the wall behind an AC unit, (which did not propery work), no heat at all in the bathroom and the window frame was covered in mould from the shower.
But worst was to come, we returned to the hotel on Saturday at about 4 pm, and there was a noise like a jet engine outside our room, the kitchen extractor ducting was right outside our room (between the bedroom window and the bathroom window), the noise was too much to bear, I complained and was offered a change of room, but this was no use to us as we were leaving the next day, so we went down into the hotel to sit it out, but the public areas are draughty, cold and not comfortable.
Other people in our party had similar problems, no heat at all, no bath plug, tepid water, noise etc etc, all this was put to reception where the one lady actually called one of our party "darling", how in-appropriate/condecending/patronising is that. Eventually Gary, the manager, became involved and offered a discount on the quoted rate, but I feel that no discount could possibly compensate for the conditions we were subjected to.
On the positive side, the hotel is in a wonderful position for visitingYork, walking distance to all sites of interest and the breakfasts we had were very good, plenty of choice and well cooked ingredients
Sorry Monkbar, but by not informing us all before about the level of works going on, and giving us the choice to carry on with the booking or go else where, is totally un-acceptable. less
