We read the reviews before booking and they were mainly very good this was 2-3 months earlier, since then the reviews have been far from good and I can see why.
We booked through a Groupon deal, that was our first mistake as I think we were treated as second class. The reception area was very pleasant and clean and the staff were very nice too although we had to wait quite a while to be seen to. We arrived early so decided to have lunch in the bar, this was the second mistake as the pizza we ordered was rock hard around the edge and couldn't be eaten and it was on a stone cold plate also the hand cut chips were revolting as they were just a soft mush as though at some time they had been fried but then reheated in the microwave when needed.
We eventually checked in after the receptionist changed our room for some unknown reason. The room was large and clean but there was a threadbare part on the carpet in the centre of the room. It was like being in a goldfish bowl as the room was next to the car park and at eye level, it just needed some nets putting up at the windows, as it was we had to close the curtains and turn on the lights. The bathroom ceiling was grubby and the shower head was filthy. Another problem with the location was that both mornings we were woken by a motorbike with a loud exhaust, I guess they were a member of staff.
As part of the Groupon deal we had breakfast and main course at dinner. The breakfast was good although the waiter forgot to bring our pots of tea and had to be reminded. The dinner was another matter, the soup was good but the bread rolls were a joke and partly inedible as they were rock hard, the worst was to come, the main course was disgusting we ordered a vegetarian risotto and plaice, the risotto was awful and after a couple of mouthfuls was rejected, whoever cooks this food has no idea on vegetarian meals and presentation. The plaice I had was beyond words, it was as though it was in a thin plastic coating and the meat inside was just mush, god knows how they could ruin such a meal, and the boiled potatoes had been overcooked and were so soft. While we were trying to come to terms with this disaster, we had been waiting for over 15 minutes for wine we had ordered, eventually we had to remind the waitress who had forgotten.
We visited the spa in the afternoon to book some treatments where we were told that they were fully booked for the next 2 days. So much for a spa break.
We decided to try the swimming pool out later on, this was another mistake. The jacuzzi was closed for some unknown reason and no idea when it would reopen, the steam room and sauna were nice but we tried the pool and it was FREEZING, it was a wonder we didn't suffer from hypothermia after leaving, the changing room was ok but it would have been useful to have a spinner to dry out the costumes.
All in all we were glad to leave the place and certainly will not be returning we have also decided not to book a Groupon break again. less
