We chose this hotels for its location. We wanted to be near the train station and near the theatre as we were seeing a concert there. There's many hotels in this area, we used Jet2 City breaks to book this one and the flight from Leeds.
The flight was quick, 2 1/2 hours, and we found the bus station at the airport easily. The next bus leaving for Rome was a Terravision bus, 7€ per person one way.
It only took about 40 minutes to get to the drop off at the train station, then a 10 minute walk to the Universo.
Check in was quick although not that friendly.
Our room was small, but modern and clean, a big bed, nice bathroom. There was no view, just overlooking a scruffy area in the middle of the hotel, with other rooms facing us. Didn't bother me though as it was quiet. The wardrobe in the room was small and no drawers, only shelves. More for a short trip, but we were there 4 nights so our clothes were a bit squashed!
Breakfast was available at the hotel, for 5€ per person per day, it can be added to your bill. Each morning we were greeted by Monica who is the most friendly person we came across in the hotel ( and Rome!) and deserves recognition. The breakfast was adequate, and for such a good price you can't go wrong. Ask the waiters for a cappuccino, worth paying the money just for one of those!
We had a couple of drinks at the bar when returning from our adventures in an afternoon and found them to be reasonably priced.
We were due to leave early on our departure day, so we paid our bill the night before. The shock was the tourist tax. We knew there was a tax to pay, but it was €6 per person per night! The most expensive anywhere in the Mediterranean! I know it's not the hotels fault, but be aware!
All in all, a decent hotel, reasonably priced and in a good location. less

Thank you for having chosen Best Western Plus Hotel Universo and for sharing with other travelers your kind opinion about our facilities and services.
We were glad to note your compliments on the overall services of the hotel, which we will not miss to share with our Team, particularly with Monica! I'm sure she will be equally pleased to know her efforts have been noticed and appreciated.
In the meantime, we have taken note of the areas where we could improve and thank you for this constructive feedback: rest assured that we will definitely take them into consideration.
Concerning the city tax, I perfectly understand your disappointment: a Overnight Accommodation Tax is imposed in Rome from 01.01.2011.
The amount of the above fee for 4 star hotels is Euro 6.00 per person, per night, for a maximum of 10 nights stay and will be collected by the hotel Reception upon departure.
As you already have well precised, the above tax is totally due to the City Council (Comune di Roma) therefore it’s not a charge for hotel services.
It would be a pleasure to have the chance to serve you again in the future.
With our warmest regards,
BW Plus Hotel Universo
