Our visit to this Best Western Hotel was generally a relaxed and pleasing one, however, there were a few hiccups to begin with and slight staff inattentiveness. Yet, I’ve decided to give the benefit of the doubt and award four stars.
Firstly, the hotel is much larger than you’d expect. It’s clearly a base for functions and parties as much as it is for travelling guests. The interior decor mixes from outmoded, out-of-the-ark style wood finishes to more modern and classic surroundings throughout. Our twin room (310) was reasonably big and the air-conditioning was thankfully totally operational and a real asset. Disappointingly, our companions’ rooms (301, 302) despite being required as twins came with double bed comforters, sheets and bedding. We had to ask the staff downstairs a couple of times to have this sorted as we had specifically all ordered twins. This was the beginning of some slightly inert behaviours – for example, we wanted to order a taxi one day and had to wait thirty minutes for the staff to actual get a quote; another day we hired bikes from reception and it took over thirty minutes because the keys and garage door fobs were either missing or non-working; and finally drinks service at the bar was slightly off-colour. Having said all that, I’m prepared to overlook it because the overall stay was a good one. Our beds were very comfortable and, whilst simple, the bathroom facilities were fine.
Breakfast is a good affair with a reasonable spread of everything from breads, fruit and yoghurts to hot, cooked sustenance. COVID-19 social distancing measures are laid out through the hotel and at least in that respect the property is doing their part.
The location is fantastic, along Kerkstraat, right near Sint-Janskathedraal and many bars and restaurants besides.
So, on the whole a little hit and miss when it comes to the staff but they mean well, and the experience was generally quite positive. less
